Tennis Earns Two Championship Titles at Raider Shootout

DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Cincinnati tennis team picked up two doubles championship titles and a singles runner-up title while participating at the Wright State University Raider Shootout Sept. 28-30.  The doubles tandem of junior Ashleigh Witte (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) and senior Jasmine Lee (Canton, Ohio/Glen Oak) were crowned the Flight A doubles champions while junior Sierra Sullivan (Austin, Texas) and graduate student Elise Woulfe (Western Springs, Ill./Lyons Township) won the Flight B doubles title.  Sullivan also earned a runner-up title in the Flight C singles competition. 

Cincinnati competed against nine teams at the shootout, including Dayton, Detroit Mercy, IUPUI, Northern Kentucky, Northwestern Ohio, Oberlin, Oakland, Wittenberg and Wright State.  The competition was comprised of four singles flights and two doubles flights.

In Flight A doubles action, Witte and Lee cruised through three rounds before meeting Detroit Mercy’s Sujashville and Fernandez in the championship match.  The Bearcats took down the Titans 8-4 to earn the title.  In other Flight A doubles action, the duo of senior Caitlin O’Gara (Springboro, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick) and junior Carly Wilson (Fort Mitchell, Ky./Beechwood) were the runners-up in the back draw while freshmen Kelly Poggensee-Wei (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake North) and Hannah Wille (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway Central) picked up an opening round win against Wright State’s McNamara and Lewis. 

Sullivan and Woulfe were triumphant in the Flight B doubles bracket after beating Dayton’s McNulty and Filbrant 8-2 in the final round. 



In the singles competition, Sullivan advanced to the final match of Flight C before falling to Dayton’s Katie Boeckman 6-3, 6-1.  Wilson also competed in Flight C and beat Oakland’s Grace Keating 6-3, 6-3 in the back draw championship match.

In Flight A singles action, both Wille and O’Gara advanced to the semifinal round.  Wille lost 6-4, 7-5 to eventual champion Nino Sujashville of Detroit Mercy while O’Gara fell 6-0, 2-6, 10-4 to Valeria Kilikouskaya, also from Detroit Mercy.  Lee won her opening round match against Brenna Sheldon of Oberlin 6-0, 6-4 before falling in the quarterfinal round.  Witte lost to Kilikouskaya in the first round, but rebounded to win the back draw competition.

Poggensee-Wei represented the Bearcats in Flight B singles action and finished with two wins in the competition, including a 7-6, 6-3 victory over IUPUI’s Vanesssa Whyte in the opening round.

The Bearcats will conclude the fall portion of their schedule when they participate in the ITA Regional in West Lafayette, Ind., Oct. 18-22.
