CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati tennis team completed its fall season last weekend at the USTA/ITA Regional tournament. Senior Jasmine Lee (Canton, Ohio/Glen Oak) and junior Ashleigh Witte (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) competed in both singles and doubles at the prestigious fall championship.
Witte competed in the qualifying singles bracket where she beat Chattanooga’s Claire Mulyadi 6-2, 6-2 in the first round before falling to Claudia Escribens of Purdue 7-6 (4), 6-3 in the quarterfinal round.
Lee faced BIG EAST foe Stefanie Villajuan of Louisville in the opening round of the main draw, winning 6-2, 6-3. The senior then fell to 12th seeded Alyssa Hibberd of Memphis 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
The Bearcats teamed in doubles and made a run through to the back draw semifinal round. The duo lost to eventual runners-up Ashleigh Artel and Marie Casares of Vanderbilt in the first round, but picked up two wins in the consolation bracket. Lee and Witte topped Louisville’s Mandy Brown and Villajuan 8-6 and then downed another Louisville team of Valentina Schneider and Alex Tochovsky 8-3 to advance to the semifinal. The duo was finally stopped by Miami (Ohio)’s Christine Guerrazzi and Christina Raymond 8-6.
The USTA/ITA Regional Championship ended the fall season for the Bearcats. The team’s regular season will begin on Jan. 19 at 5 p.m. when it plays host to Indiana at the Western Tennis and Fitness Club.
