Women's Tennis Wraps up First Day of UC Invitational|

CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati women’s tennis team wrapped up day one at the UC Invitational at the Western Tennis and Fitness Club. The first ever tournament welcomed Bowling Green, Ball State and Xavier for the two day event.
Doubles play led UC with three victories out of six matches as well as an additional exhibition victory. The Bearcats picked up two doubles wins from Kelly Poggensee-Wei (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake North) and Caitlin O’Gara (Springboro, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick) as they paired up and defeated Bowling Green (Reuland/Fillis) 8-7 (2) and Xavier (Brinker/Liggins) 8-0.
Poggensee-Wei also lost a heart breaker in singles action. The sophomore dropped the first set before coming back to force a super tie-breaker where she came up just short 10-6.
Lauren Bellinger (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome) and Ashleigh Witte (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) lost a nail-biter to Xavier 7-8 (4). The duo fell behind 6-3 before storming back to force a tie-break. Bellinger bounced back with a big singles win over Ball State’s Toni Ormond 6- 3, 6-2 to conclude her day.
Katya Bure (Springfield, N.J./Jonathon Dayton) and Sierra Sullivan (Austin, Texas/The Khabele School/Stetson University) teamed up to defeat Bowling Green (Hutchinson/Plaszewski) 8-4. They also defeated Xavier (Dennis/Lawless) 6-0 in an exhibition match.
Hannah Wille (St. Louis, Missouri/Parkway Central) won one of Cincinnati’s two singles matches, defeating Ball State’s Marin Kanii 6-3, 6-1.
UC will finish up tomorrow with one round of doubles and two rounds of singles. The Bearcats will face both Bowling Green and Xavier in singles matches, while facing off against Ball State in doubles play. The first round of doubles will start at 9:30 a.m. The tournament will conclude Saturday afternoon with singles action between UC and Xavier starting at approximately 3:30 p.m.
