CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati women’s tennis team will start spring-season play Friday afternoon at the Western Tennis & Fitness Club. The Bearcats will face off with Toledo at 2 p.m.

The Bearcats open the spring season after competing in three fall tournaments. Cincinnati played in tournaments hosted by both Bowling Green and Indiana before hosting the first-ever UC Invitational.

The Bearcats opened the season with a solid showing at the BGSU Invitational, earning three singles titles and one doubles titles during the two-day event. Kelly Poggensee-Wei (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake North), Lauren Bellinger (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome) and Hannah Wille (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway Central) all recorded tournament wins in their singles flights while Poggensee-Wei and Bellinger teamed up to win the second-flight doubles championship.

A more open tournament format was featured at the Hoosier Classic. Bellinger came away with a pair of singles wins while the duos of Witte and O’Gara and Katya Bure (Springfield, N.J./Jonathan Dayton) and Poggensee-Wei each earned a pair of doubles wins.

Fall action wrapped up at the Western Tennis & Fitness Club with a hidden dual tournament format against Ball State, Bowling Green and Xavier. The scoring throughout the tournament would have resulted in UC defeating Bowling Green 5-2 but falling to Ball State 5-2 and Xavier 4-3 should dual scores have counted. Poggensee-Wei and O’Gara won all three doubles matches at the No. 1 spot while Bellinger went undefeated in singles play.

Bellinger picked up the first conference accolades of her career in the fall, earning American Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Month in September. The recognition included her results at the BGSU Invitational and Hoosier Classic.

Friday’s match will also be the first of the spring for Toledo after competing in four fall tournaments. The Rockets hosted a tournament to open the fall before competing at the BGSU Invite, the Spartan Invite at the ITA Regional Tournament.

The Bearcats defeated Toledo last season 4-3 on Feb. 9. Jasmine Lee, O’Gara, Witte and Poggensee-Wei all picked up singles victories in the match after Toledo earned wins in all three doubles matches.
