CINCINNATI PROBABLE STARTERS 2006-07 STATISTICS LAST TIME VS. MIAMI: A UC team that fielded only four players after bouts of illness and injury fell to Miami (Ohio), 6-1, on Jan. 22, 2006 at the Riverside Racquet Club. The RedHawks swept to the doubles point behind victories at first and second doubles and a default victory at third doubles. In singles action, Miami earned victories in three of the top four spots to go with default victories at fifth and sixth singles. Elizabeth Young, playing in the No. 2 spot, earned the first dual win of her career for UC. LAST TIME VS. OHIO STATE: UC opened the 2006 spring season with a 7-0 loss to Ohio State at the Jesse Owens West Recreation Center on Jan. 21. In singles, the Buckeyes at the top four positions all posted straight-set victories, while Nos. 5 and 6 won by default. Ohio State also downed the Bearcats in all three doubles positions, with a default victory at No. 3. NEWCOMERS LEADING THE WAY: The Bearcats have just three players who have earned more than one letter at UC and just one, senior Hannah Hinton, is in the starting lineup. UC is seeing great results from the last two recruiting classes, starting with freshman Rachel Owens and her 9-2 record. Transfers Valeriya Dandik (Missouri) and Alizee Paradis (Marshall) have claimed starting spots, along with sophomores Elizabeth Young and Jenny Rowen. TOUGH ROAD: The Bearcats' schedule this year is a challenging one. UC will host current ranked teams No. 43 Indiana and No. 70 Louisville and travel to face No. 19 Kentucky and No. 60 Marshall. If they reach the BIG EAST Tournament, the Bearcats also have the possibility of playing No. 4 Notre Dame or No. 33 USF. FAST START: Freshman Rachel Owens, the only true freshman on the team, is off to a blazing start. She won her first six matches and is currently a team-best 9-2. She reached the flight D finals at the Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational and won all three matches at the Miami Invitational. Owens has claimed the No. 1 spot in the lineup and won the clinching match in a tie-breaker at No. 1 singles to earn UC's season-opening win over Bowling Green. BACK IN FORM: After winning 17 matches as a freshman, including a team-best 13 dual wins, senior Hannah Hinton has missed most of the past two seasons with injuries. She returned to the full-time line-up in the fall and went 7-3. She posted four wins at Dartmouth's Big Green Invitational to reach the A singles final, beating the No. 3 and No. 8 seeds on the way. STRONG START TO THE SEASONL: UC opened the season at the Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational and posted a number of strong finishes. Lindsay Willeford reached the flight D singles finals, along with Rachel Owens, and teamed with Elizabeth Young to win the flight D doubles title. Alizee Paradis reached the flight C championship and Valeriya Dandik and Jennifer Keiner reached the flight A doubles final. UP NEXT: The Bearcats host a pair of matches next weekend, playing Eastern Michigan at the Queen City Racquet Club on Friday, Feb. 2 at 7 p.m. and Rutgers at the Western Hills Racquet Club at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 3.
