CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati women’s tennis team will host their cross-town rival Xavier University for a midweek match on Wednesday, March 26 at the Western Tennis & Fitness Center.

It was announced Monday that the match will be moved indoors to Western Tennis & Fitness Center from the Trabert-Talbert Tennis Center due to inclement weather. The time has also changed to 1 p.m. from the original 3 p.m. start time.

The Bearcats enter the match with an 8-9 overall record and 1-2 mark in conference play after coming up victorious in all three of their matches over spring break in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Cincinnati was able to record sweeps against the University of Puerto Rico, SUNY Geneseo, and Colgate.

Ashleigh Witte (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) became the first to earn double digit singles wins on the year. She is currently holding the team’s best singles record at 12-5. Kelly Poggensee-Wei (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake North) picked up two victories in her two singles matches in San Juan and upped her record to 10-5. Poggensee-Wei extended her singles win streak to four, matching her season high.

The two duos of Poggensee-Wei/Caitlin O’Gara (Springboro, Ohio/ Bishop Fenwick) and Witte/Lauren Bellinger (Dublin, Ohio/ Dublin Jerome) swept all three of their doubles matches, leading the team with 10 victories.

Xavier is currently on a three-match win streak with their latest match coming against Dayton, where the Musketeers recorded a convincing 7-0 sweep over the Flyers. Xavier is second overall in the BIG EAST behind only No. 35 DePaul.

Cincinnati has come out on top the last four of five meetings against their cross-town foe and will try to make it five of six after Wednesday’s matchup.

“We are getting ready to play Xavier on Wednesday, a big cross-town match for us” said head coach Angela Wilson. “We had a great spring break in Puerto Rico, we played three matches all victorious and had some great tennis in the sun. Last year we came up victorious 4-3 against Xavier and every year we played them it’s been a tough battle.”

The Bearcats will try to stretch their win streak to four with Doubles action beginning at 1 p.m. at the Western Tennis & Fitness Club.
