CINCINNATI – The No. 9 seed University of Cincinnati women’s tennis team will face the No. 8 seed Rutgers Scarlet Knights on Thursday, April 19, at 9 a.m., in the first round of the 2012 BIG EAST Championship at USF Varsity Courts on the South Florida campus.
The Bearcats will enter play against RU having lost three straight, a 6-1 home loss to crosstown rival Xavier and road losses to Louisville, 6-1, and to Marshall, 6-1. Amidst the three losses, UC got strong play from sophomore Ashleigh Witte who went 2-1 in singles play and improved her team-leading win/loss record to 13-10. Senior Safiyya Ismail also turned in an impressive performance on senior day against Xavier as she teamed with Kristina Georgieva to capture an 8-2 doubles win. The momentum continued into singles play where Ismail secured a 7-5, 6-0 victory in her final regular season home match as a Bearcat.
Rutgers enters play having won four straight and their last six BIG EAST matches. The Scarlet Knights have been led by senior Jennifer Holzberg, who has won all six of her matches in RU’s consecutive victories over Seton Hall, Pittsburgh and West Virginia. The matchup against Rutgers is the first time the two teams have met since Feb. 15, 2009 when the Bearcats secured a 4-3 home victory.
Cincinnati will look to improve upon their 10th place finish in the 2011 BIG EAST Championship. Last season, UC once again drew the No. 9 seed and was defeated by No. 8 Georgetown, 4-1, in the first round. In consolation play, the Bearcats topped No. 12 Connecticut, 4-0, before falling to No. 10 St. John’s, 4-2, finishing 10th at the event.
The event will run from April 19-22. UC will play at least two matches at the event, with the presence of a consolation bracket. The winner of the Cincinnati-Rutgers match will face No. 1 seed Notre Dame on Friday, April 20 at 9 a.m.
