CINCINNATI - On the heels of a highly successful 2016-17 campaign that saw the program earn its first Top 10 placement in the team regional rankings (#9), the University of Cincinnati tennis program added another achievement as the 2017-18 incoming Bearcats have been named the No. 5 Mid-Major Recruiting Class according to the Tennis Recruiting Network. Along with that ranking, the Bearcats’ class also ranks No. 32 nationally amongst all NCAA Division I programs.
“A lot of hard work went into building this recruiting class and it is nice to be recognized on both the National and Mid-Major level,” Head Coach Eric Toth said. “Seeing other American Athletic Conference schools in the rankings leave us very little choice but to recruit at this level year after year.”
According to the rankings, the American Athletic Conference leads all conferences on the Mid-Major list with four classes ranked in the Top 25, including top-ranked UCF, No. 5 UC, No. 18 Memphis and No. 22 Tulane while East Carolina fell just outside the Top 25. The four ranked classes ties for the most by one conference in the rankings with Conference USA also adding four (No. 4 Rice, No. 7 Florida International, No. 13 Florida Atlantic and No. 19 North Texas).
The rankings also feature four classes in the Top 25 from programs in the Ohio Valley Region with the Bearcats’ No. 5 ranking leading the way. The other three regional teams on the list include No. 12 Miami (Ohio), No. 18 Memphis and No. 23 Murray State.
“It is now up to our staff to coach our incoming players in a way they will reach their full potential and keep this program moving in the direction of competing year in and out for conference championships and also for national ITA team and individual recognition,” Toth stated. “I believe the pieces are in place for all of this to happen.”
The highly ranked class is comprised of six individuals, including five freshmen in Alexia Coutino (Tuxtla Gutierrez, Mexico), Ioana Guna (Craiova, Romania), Amanda Huser (Mason, Ohio), Emma Miceli (Mississauga, Ontario) and Maria Teixido Garcia (Lleida Catalonia, Spain), and transfer Ellee Bullock (Dublin, Ohio/Utah State).
