Women's Tennis Opens Fall Season at BGSU Friday

CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati tennis team is slated to open its fall season at the Bowling Green State University Invitational  Sept. 20-21. The tournament will be held at Keefe Courts on the BGSU campus.

Seven Bearcats will compete in both singles and doubles action. A total of three seniors will compete this weekend in Caitlin O’Gara (Springboro, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick), Sierra Sullivan (Austin Texas/The Khabele School) and Ashley Witte (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West). Also competing will be sophomores Kelly Poggensee-Wei (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake North) and Hanna Wille (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway Central). Lauren Bellinger (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome) and Kayta Bure (Springfield, N.J./Jonathan Dayton) will be competing collegiately for the first time.

Six other teams will make up the remaining tournament field. The Bearcats will face off against Bowling Green, Detroit, Duquesne, Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) and Toledo.

The singles portion of the tournament will be broken down into six flights, with each being comprised of a main draw and a back draw. Witte will take on Pia Rygh of Toledo in the first round. Poggensee-Wei will face Emily Reuland of BGSU in the second flight. O’Gara will also compete in the second flight, taking on Emily Mazzola of Toledo. Bure will face Julia Fernandes of Detroit in the third flight while Bellinger will face Chandler Consonery of Duquesne in the fourth flight. The fifth flight will feature Wille taking on Hannah Drayton of BGSU and Sullivan squaring off with Sofia Sorokina of IPFW.



There will be three doubles flights with Witte and O’Gara teaming up in the first flight to face Katelyn Nguyen and Mackenzie Bowman from Toledo. Poggensee-Wei and Bellinger will face Zuzanna Stelmaszak and Chandler Consonery of Duquesne in the second flight. Sullivan and Bure will play Alrissa Tobe and Maria Mastromario of Duquesne in the third flight. Wille will be teaming up Raina Halabi (Detroit) and will face the winner of the Sullivan/Bure vs. Tobe/Mastromarino match.

All tournament action will begin on Friday, Sept. 20 and conclude on Sunday, Sept. 21.
