Oct. 31, 2013
CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati women's tennis team will host the first-ever UC Invitational throughout the weekend at the Western Tennis and Fitness Club with student-athletes from UC, Xavier, Bowling Green State and Ball State competing during the two-day tournament.
"This is a new tournament for Cincinnati and we are excited to play on our home court during the fall," said head coach Angela Wilson. "All three teams competing will be teams we face during the spring so it will be great to have them here and prepare for the upcoming spring season."
Action will kick off at the event Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. with doubles action. The first singles play will start Friday at approximately 4:30 p.m. and is scheduled to conclude around 8:30 p.m. Saturday's action will start at 10 a.m. with the final doubles round before singles action runs from 11:30 a.m. to approximately 6:30 p.m.
All singles matches will use a 10-point tie break for the third set while doubles matches will be an 8-game pro set with a tiebreaker played at 7-7.
The Bearcats will return to action after a month off, most recently competing at the Hoosier Classic September 27-30. UC's fall schedule also included action at the Bowling Green State Invitational. Freshman Lauren Bellinger (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome) was named American Athletic Conference Tennis Player of the Month following the pair of events. She went undefeated in both singles and doubles action at the BGSU invite before winning a pair of singles matches at the Hoosier Classic.
The Bearcats are led this season by four seniors in Ashleigh Witte (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West), Carly Wilson (Fort Mitchell, Ky./Beechwood), Sierra Sullivan (Austin, Texas/The Khabele School/Stetson University) and Caitlin O'Gara (Springboro, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick).
The UC Invitational will be the final event of the fall season before the Bearcats begin dual action in January. The first competition is scheduled for Friday, January 17 against Toledo at the Western Tennis & Fitness Center.
