CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-16) to UCF on Thursday night in Fifth Third Arena. Freshman Breanna Barksdale (Chula Vista, Calif./Eastlake) led the Bearcats’ charge with 11 kills while junior Madi Lang (Commerce Township, Mich./Florida Atlantic) had a match-high 29 assists. Sophomore Morgan Allred (Carrolton, Texas/Hebron) and freshman Shelby Green (Dripping Springs, Texas/Dripping Springs) had 10 and 11 digs, respectively.

The Bearcats jumped out to an early 3-1 lead to open the match following two kills from freshman Mallory Blauser (Round Rock Christian Academy/Round Rock) and a Knights attacking error. Junior Me’Ashah Nicholson (Shiloh, Ill./Belleville Althoff) buried a kill across the net to tie the score at 8-8, but the Bearcats were unable to contain the Knights who then scored four straight points to go ahead 12-8. Cincinnati responded to score three of four points and climb within 20-15, but could not get any closer as the Knights closed out the first set by a score of 25-18. Nicholson finished the game with four kills and a .500 hitting percentage. The Bearcats held even with the Knights at 13 kills and 12 digs apiece.

UCF took a 2-1 match lead with a 25-20 victory in the second game. After falling behind 20-12, the Bearcats made the game interesting by scoring six straight points to get to within 20-18. Nicholson, Allred and freshman Samantha Schrenker (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community) all recorded kills during the run and the Knights chipped in with three errors to help propel Cincinnati. The Bearcats out-hit (12-11) and out-dug (14-13) the Knights during the game.

The Knights surged to a 25-16 win in the final game to win the match 3-0. UCF hit .267 with 11 kills in the game while Cincinnati had 10 kills and 12 digs.

The Bearcats will be back in action on Sunday afternoon when they play host to USF at 1 p.m. in Fifth Third Arena.
