CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati volleyball team swept Georgetown 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-22) on Friday evening at Fifth Third Arena on senior night.  Following the match, the Bearcats honored their six seniors: Emily Hayden, Karen Onuki, Becca Refenes, Rachel Rohlfs, Jordanne Scott and Megan Turner.

UC (10-16, 8-4 BIG EAST) recorded a season-high .409 hitting percentage and had only six attacking errors in the match.  The Bearcats out-blocked the Hoyas (7-18, 1-11 BIG EAST) 10-2 and led in virtually every statistical category.

Cincinnati received large contributions from each of its six seniors, including 14 kills, seven digs and a .433 attacking percentage from Jordanne Scott (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North).  Emily Hayden (Louisville, Ky./Assumption) added 11 kills with a .526 hitting clip and Karen Onuki (Troy, Ohio/Troy) had five digs and two service aces.  Becca Refenes (Westland, Mich./Lutheran Westland) registered six kills and Megan Turner (Ontario, N.Y./Wayne Central) had five kills and two blocks.  Rachel Rohlfs (Cincinnati, Ohio/Grand Valley State) led the offenses with a match-high 35 assists.

Junior Emily MacIntyre (Muncie, Ind./Yorktown) paced the defensive effort for the Bearcats with 18 digs for a 6.00 digs/set average.

Cincinnati got on the board first in the opening game with a 25-22 victory.  The Bearcats held a close lead throughout the game until the Hoyas used a kill to tie the score at 22-22.  The Bearcats responded with three straight points to win the game 25-22.  GU had two errors during the run and a kill by Turner gave the Bearcats the 1-0 match advantage.  Scott paced UC with five kills while MacIntyre added five digs.  Cincinnati ended the first game hitting .433 with only two attacking errors.

Cincinnati jumped out to an early lead in the second game.  While already possessing a 9-5 lead, the Bearcats opened a five-point scoring run, including two kills by Hayden, two service aces by Onuki and a block by Scott and Hayden to take a 13-5 lead.  The Bearcats extended the lead to 20-9 following a four-point run that included two kills by Scott, a block by Refenes and sophomore Me’Ashah Nicholson (Shiloh, Ill./Belleville Althoff) and a service ace by Rohlfs.  On set point, Rohlfs recorded a solo block to give the Bearcats a 25-16 game victory and send the team into intermission with a 2-0 advantage.  Hayden recorded seven kills in the game to lead Cincinnati.

The Hoyas grabbed a 14-11 lead in the third game following three consecutive kills, but the Bearcats clawed their way back, taking back the lead at 21-20 on an ace from Rohlfs.  A GU service error gave Cincinnati match point at 24-22 and a kill by Refenes wrapped up a senior day win for UC.

The Bearcats will host Villanova on Sun., Nov. 4 at 2 p.m.  Because of President Obama’s rally at Fifth Third Arena, the match will be played in the Lindner Center practice gym and will be closed to the public.
