Bearcats End Marquette's Perfect Conference Play

CINCINNATI –The University of Cincinnati volleyball team defeated Marquette University Saturday afternoon 3-1 (25-13, 21-25, 25-18, 25-17) at Fifth Third Arena.

The win keeps the nation's longest home winning streak alive and ends Marquette’s undefeated record in BIG EAST play. The Bearcats are now 9-2 in conference and remain in the third spot while the Golden Eagles move to 10-1, still claiming first place.

The team was led by three players with double-digit kill performances. Jordanne Scott (Indianapolis, Ind. /Lawrence North) led all players with 19 and a .455 hitting percentage, senior Missy Harpenau (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mother of Mercy) recorded 18 and a .429 hitting percentage and junior Emily Hayden (Louisville, Ky. /Assumption) who had 10 kills with a match-leading .588 percentage.

Blocking was also a key element to the win. The team recorded 13 blocks, compared to Marquette’s 4 total. Junior Becca Refenes (Westland, Mich. /Lutheran Westland) led that effort with 5 block assists.

Harpenau led the team in digs (16) for an all-around solid performance. Sophomore libero Emily MacIntyre (Muncie, Ind. /Yorktown) was close behind with 11. Freshman Jamie Netisingha (Westmont, Ill. /Hinsdale Central) recorded a career-high 9 digs in the win.

Freshman Caylin Mahoney (Fort Worth, Texas/Keller Central) led the match with 54 assists. She also recorded 7 digs and 2 blocks.



A tie score at 4 started the fourth set with kills from Harpenau. Mahoney then went on a serving run to pull the Bearcats ahead 7-4. Scott then put down a kill around the block to keep the lead 13-10. Kills from Harpenau in the back row and Scott brought the match win closer to the Bearcats 22-15. The set ended with a kill from junior Megan Turner (Ontario, N.Y. /Wayne Central) and a fourth set score of 25-17.

Kills from Scott, Hayden and Harpenau started the third set for a Bearcat lead 12-7. Another ace from Mahoney and digs from MacIntyre kept that lead 19-10. A kill from Scott out of the middle and a placed kill from Mahoney in the deep corner kept the Bearcats ahead 23-15. The third set ended with another Harpenau kill for a Bearcat win 25-18.

The second set started with kills from Harpenau and a block from Refenes for a tie at 8. The teams continued to trade points until the Bearcats got ahead 15-13. Even with a solo block from Mahoney, the Golden Eagles fought back to tie the score at 19. Marquette then went on a serving run to stay ahead 23-20. The set ended with a Marquette kill 25-21 to tie the match at 1 set each.

Turner and Scott recorded kills to start the match with a Bearcat lead 7-6. With aces from Mahoney and Harpenau and a block from Turner and Refenes, the lead was extended 13-8. Scott then went on a 5-0 serving run to get closer to the set win 20-11. The set ended for a Bearcat win 25-13. Hayden, Scott and Turner recorded a .667 hitting percentage in the set win.

The Bearcats are back in action tomorrow, November 6 at 2:00 p.m. in Fifth Third Arena against Syracuse. Fans are encouraged to wear white to the match.
