Bearcats Take First BIG EAST Tournament Match|

MILWAUKEE, Wis. -The University of Cincinnati Volleyball team defeated Villanova University 3-0 (25-11, 25-14, 25-16) in the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Championship Friday afternoon.
The dominant win was the first 3-0 sweep of the entire tournament so far.
The Bearcats were led on the match by their two First-team All-BIG EAST performers. Junior Jordanne Scott (Indianapolis, Ind. /Lawrence North) recorded 12 kills and a .526 hitting percentage. Senior Missy Harpenau (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mother of Mercy) was close behind with 11 kills. She also recorded 15 digs to tie the match-high.
Second-team All-BIG EAST freshman setter Caylin Mahoney (Fort Worth, Texas/Keller Central) led the match with 30 assists. She also put down four kills and picked up six digs. Sophomore libero Emily MacIntyre (Muncie, Ind. /Yorktown) had 14 digs in the match.
The junior class as a whole propelled the victory as well. Becca Refenes (Westland, Mich. /Lutheran Westland) recorded five kills and a career-high four aces. Emily Hayden (Louisville, Ky. /Assumption) led the team with four block assists. She also recorded five kills. Megan Turner (Ontario, N.Y. /Wayne Central) also had a solid performance offensively, puttting down seven kills and a .429 percentage.
Refenes started the third set with her fourth ace and a 5-2 lead. Harpenau added three kills to extend the lead 13-5. Kills from Turner and Scott added to the lead 21-7. The Wildcats started to fight back by scoring four points in a row for a Bearcat lead 23-14. Mahoney ended the third set and the match 25-16.
Mahoney and Hayden started the second set with a block, junior Karen Onuki (Troy, Ohio/Troy) added to her five total digs and Harpenau recorded kills to give the Bearcats the 11-6 advantage. Scott then put down two kills in a row for a 16-9 lead. A defensive effort from Onuki and MacIntyre led to a rare hitting kill from Mahoney 18-10. Scott added two assists from her hitting position for kills from Turner and Harpenau for the Bearcat set win 25-14.
Scott started the match with two kills and Refenes added two aces for a 10-2 Bearcat lead. Turner then added an ace of her own to continue the lead 15-9. Mahoney served a 6-0 run to push the Bearcats even further ahead 22-11 thanks to two kills from Harpenau. Refenes ended the set with a kill and the Bearcat win 25-11. The Bearcats, as a team, hit .375 while holding the Wildcats to a -.125 hitting percentage.
With the win, the Bearcats move on to the Semifinals of the BIG EAST Championship tomorrow evening, November 19 at 4:30 p.m. ET against the winner of the Seton Hall and Marquette match tonight.
