CINCINNATI - Molly Alvey, head coach at the University of Houston, has been named the 12th head coach in the 40-year history of University of Cincinnati volleyball, Director of Athletics Whit Babcock announced Tuesday.

"I am so incredibly excited to be the next head coach at the University of Cincinnati," said Alvey. "What an amazing opportunity to continue doing what I love and to do it close to my home. There is a clear vision within the UC Athletics Department and a clear direction in which the UC volleyball program is headed. Throughout my interactions with Cincinnati, Director of Athletics Whit Babcock has undoubtedly given a fresh energy to the department in just a short period of time. I am ready to add to that energy."

"It is my privilege to welcome Coach Alvey as the newest member of our Bearcat family," said Babcock. "As we advanced through our search, I became very impressed with her coaching pedigree and leadership. When I met her in person, I became very excited by Coach Alvey's energy and enthusiasm. From an outstanding field of candidates for this position, she became the top pick to be our head coach."

Alvey spent the past two seasons as head coach at Houston, leading the Cougars to a 38-24 overall record and mentoring 2011 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-America selection Lucy Charuk. She also spent the 2004 season as the head coach at the University of Southern Indiana, leading the Screaming Eagles to Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) regular-season and tournament titles en route to the program's second-ever NCAA Division II national championship tournament berth.

Prior to Houston, Alvey spent five seasons at the University of Mississippi, including the final two seasons as associate head coach. She began her career at Temple in 2001 where she spent three seasons as a graduate assistant coach.

"Molly has local ties, coming from Louisville, has coached in the SEC, and has had two stints as a head coach," said senior associate director of athletics and senior woman administrator Robin Martin, who chaired the search committee. "She has a high energy level, competitive drive and is a rising young coaching star. Talking with people around the industry, they have been impressed with her maturity level and her ability to lead a program. Molly is a hard-working, successful woman who will be a great role model for our student-athletes."

Alvey's 2011 Cougars were ranked as high as 38th in the AVCA RPI and placed four members on the ll-onference teams. She guided Houston to a third-place finish in Conference USA in 2010 with a 13-7 record. It was the program's first top-three finish since 2005 and the 13 C-USA wins were also the most in league play since 1999. In addition, Alvey tutored all-C-USA first-team selections Charuk and Chandace Tryon. Charuk went on to be named an AVCA All-America honorable mention selection while earning a spot as an AVCA all-region selection. She also earned a spot on the Canadian national team during the summer of 2010. Not only did Alvey have success on the court in her first season at UH, but she also guided the program to a 3.37 GPA during the 2010-11 academic year, the highest departmental GPA and the best in program history. The squad also earned the AVCA team academic award.

During her five-year tenure at Ole Miss, Alvey was part of a coaching staff that guided Ole Miss to a pair of NCAA national championship tournament appearances in 2006 and 2007. In that time, Alvey was responsible for coaching two-time All-Southeastern Conference setter Rachel Kieckhaefer who also picked up all-region honorable mention honors as a junior. She also played a part in developing All-SEC selection Jaclyn Toohey as well as SEC all-freshman selections Jackie Jones, Regina Thomas and Whitney Craven. As recruiting coordinator, Alvey helped secure the nation's 23rd-ranked recruiting class in 2009.

In 2006, the Rebels advanced to the NCAA national championship tournament for the first time in program history while tying the school record for conference wins in a season with 10. Ole Miss then advanced to the NCAA tournament for a second-straight season in 2007 with a 25-9 mark on the year and a record-setting 14 wins in SEC play. The Rebels finished third in the league and second in the western division that season while posting the first 20-win season since 1989.

During her lone season at Southern Indiana, Alvey led the Screaming Eagles to a 24-7 regular-season finish, claiming the GLVC regular-season title with a 15-1 conference record. Southern Indiana then stormed through the conference tournament to earn the program's second-ever NCAA Division II tournament berth, advancing to the second round. In her time at USI, Alvey coached two all-region selections and the program's second All-America selection, Laura Ellerbusch.

During her three years at Temple, Alvey was part of a program that posted an overall record of 72-25 (.742), claimed an Atlantic 10 Conference championship and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament in 2002. The Owls finished as A-10 runners-up in 2001 and 2003. Alvey was also a part of a staff that coached A-10 Player of the Year Xu Yun in 2002 and two-time A-10 Setter of the Year Allison Runk in 2002 and 2003. The Owls featured eight first-team all-conference selections during her tenure.

Alvey played volleyball and basketball at Centre College in Danville, Ky., earning her bachelor's degree in economics in 2001. Alvey lettered all four seasons as a setter for the volleyball team and held the school's career record for assists with 4,340. She helped her team to an 82-59 overall record during her career, earning all-conference honors as a junior and senior.

Alvey also played basketball for Centre and was an all-conference selection at point guard as a senior. She holds the single-season three-point percentage record at .456.

Alvey takes the reins of a Bearcats program that has won 20 or more matches in 16 of the last 17 seasons and has made four-straight NCAA tournament appearances. The Bearcats won BIG EAST regular-season titles in 2008 and 2010 and earned the program's first BIG EAST championship tournament title in 2011. Since 2003, 11 Bearcats have earned AVCA All-America honors. Two-time All-America middle blocker Jordanne Scottreturns for her senior season in 2012 after leading the Bearcats to a 27-10 mark in 2011. UC is 58-10 against BIG EAST opponents over the last four seasons and held the nation's longest active home-court winning streak throughout the 2011 season, ultimately reaching 48 straight home victories.
