CINCINNATI - University of Cincinnati senior volleyball player Missy Harpenau (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mother of Mercy) was named the Greater Cincinnati Northern Kentucky Women's Sports Association College Sportswoman of the Year, as announced at the 19th annual awards banquet on Monday evening (April 23).
The Greater Cincinnati Northern Kentucky Women's Sports Association College Sportswoman of the Year is presented to a woman playing at a local college who demonstrates superior athletic achievement. Other considerations will be academic standards, community involvement, and outstanding leadership qualities. Harpenau was selected from a pool of six finalists, including UC All-American Jasmine Cotten and local student-athletes from Northern Kentucky University and Miami University.
The senior outside hitter capped off her career by being named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) all-America honorable mention team. In her senior year, Harpenau was First-Team all-BIG EAST and BIG EAST Tournament Most Outstanding Player. She finished third in the BIG EAST in service aces per set (0.39), sixth in points per set (4.17) and sixth in kills per set (3.50).
The Bearcats ended the season 27-10, winning the first BIG EAST Tournament title in UC history. UC has won 20 or more matches in 16 of the last 17 seasons.
