June 5, 2008
CINCINNATI-- The University of Cincinnati's 2008 volleyball schedule features four tournaments to open the season and visits from two of the BIG EAST's top teams in Notre Dame and longtime rival Louisville.
The Bearcat open the season by hosting the sixth annual State Farm/Vernon Manor Bearcats Invitational (Aug. 29-31). UC welcomes Wright State, Tennessee Tech and Marshall to Fifth Third Arena for the three-day tourney.
Head coach Reed Sunahara, a native of Hawaii, returns to his roots when he leads the Bearcats into the Waikiki Beach Marriott Volleyball Challenge (Sept. 4-7), where they will take on Wyoming and 2007 NCAA participants Minnesota and Hawaii. UC then travels to Tempe, Ariz., for a weekend tournament hosted by Arizona State (Sept. 12-13), in which they will battle Cal-State Northridge, Arizona State and Montana. The Bearcats wrap up the early-season tournament slate with the IU Credit Union Invitational hosted by Indiana (Sept. 19-20). UC will take on Ball State and George Mason as well as the host Hoosiers.
"Our 2008 schedule is a very competitive one which will test our team," said Sunahara. "We are playing in four tournaments - from as close to home as Bloomington to as far away as Honolulu - which will prepare us for a rigorous BIG EAST season."
Other non-conference matchups pit UC against IUPUI (Sept. 23) Morehead State (Oct. 21), UAB (Nov. 28) and NCAA squads in Dayton (Oct. 7) and Western Kentucky (Oct. 14).
The BIG EAST slate features visits from two of the league's top programs in Notre Dame (Oct. 5) and rival Louisville (Oct. 18). Other home matches include DePaul (Oct. 3), Seton Hall (Oct. 10), Villanova (Oct. 12), USF (Oct. 31), Georgetown (Nov. 2) and Rutgers (Nov. 16). UC will travel to face BIG EAST foes St. John's (Sept. 26), Connecticut (Sept. 28), Syracuse (Oct. 24), Marquette (Oc.t 26), West Virginia (Nov. 7) and Pittsburgh (Nov. 9).
The 2008 BIG EAST Tournament will be held at the Fitzgerald Field House on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh on Nov. 21-23.
"This schedule is set up well for us," Sunahara continued. "Our focus is to compete in each match, stay healthy, and fight for a BIG EAST championship."
UC opens the season on Aug. 23 with the annual alumni exhibition match.
