Volleyball Unveils 2013 Schedule|
July 1, 2013
CINCINNATI – Head coach Molly Alvey and the University of Cincinnati volleyball team announced their 2013 schedule on Thursday. The lineup features seven NCAA tournament teams from 2012, including Tennessee, Dayton, North Carolina, Western Kentucky, Cleveland State, Michigan State and Louisville.
“First of all, I think we are ecstatic that the schedule is finally finished” said Alvey. “We are very happy to see all of the excitement around the volleyball program. We have fielded many phone calls and emails about revealing our schedule, so we are happy to have it together and out. Our non-conference schedule again proves to be one of the tougher schedules in the country and I like scheduling that way. We have a young team who will need to get prepared for conference play, so we will play several top-25 programs and several tournament teams from last year. The philosophy behind that is to get us prepared for conference play because that is what essentially gets you into the NCAA tournament. I think with our four opening weekend tournaments, we should be prepared to play our conference schedule and compete at the highest level.”
The schedule will split 16 home matches and 16 away matches and will feature nine home and nine away matches with American Athletic Conference teams.
The Bearcats will host two regular-season tournaments, including the University of Cincinnati Invitational to open the season. UC will welcome Butler, 2012 NCAA participant Tennessee and Morehead State to Fifth Third Arena for the weekend and will begin its 2013 campaign against the Bulldogs at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 30.
Cincinnati will hit the road for a stretch of four matches against three 2012 NCAA competitors. The Bearcats will first travel to Athens, Ohio on Sept. 6 and 7 for the Ohio Tournament where they will face Ohio, Dayton and North Carolina. They also will head south to Bowling Green, Ky. for a match against rival Western Kentucky on Sept. 10.
UC will host its second invitational tournament on Sept. 13 and 14 when it faces Navy, Cleveland State and Northern Kentucky. It will close tournament play Sept. 20 and 21 at the Michigan State Tournament in East Lansing, Mich. There the Bearcats will play Duquesne, Eastern Michigan and the host Spartans.
The American schedule will begin with a pair of home matches against new conference foes Temple and Memphis on Sept. 27 and 29, respectively. The team will then travel to the Lone Star State for matches against Houston (Oct. 4) and SMU (Oct. 6).
The Bearcats will then return home for four consecutive matches. They will face American teams UCF on Oct. 10 and USF on Oct. 13 before squaring off in the first of two matches against longtime rival Louisville on Oct. 18. The final match of the home series will be against crosstown foe Xavier on Oct. 22.
Following the homestand, the Bearcats will travel for four straight matches, including a trip to the northeast to face Connecticut on Oct. 25 and Rutgers on Oct. 27. They will also begin their second round of matches against conference competition by playing at Memphis on Nov. 1 and Temple at Nov. 3.
Cincinnati will welcome the Mustangs of SMU on Nov. 8 and the Cougars of Houston on Nov. 10 and will travel to Florida to take on the Bulls of USF on Nov. 15 and the Golden Knights of UCF on Nov. 17.
The final road match of the season will be at Louisville on Nov. 22.
The Bearcats will close the season with two home matches against RU and UConn on Nov. 27 and 29, respectively. The season finale will be played at 1 p.m. and will also represent senior day for Cincinnati.
Cincinnati will feature a very young roster with nine members listed as underclassmen, including incoming freshmen Breanna Barksdale (Chula Vista, Calif./Eastlake), Mallory Blauser (Round Rock, Texas/Round Rock Christian Academy), Kristin Conor (Lone Tree, Colo./Highlands Ranch), Shelby Green (Dripping Springs, Texas/Dripping Springs), Ciara Hill (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook), and Amber Rizzio (Loves Park, Ill./Harlem). Emmi MacIntyre (Muncie, Ind./Yorktown) returns as the only senior. MacIntyre currently ranks second on the UC record book with a 4.24 career digs per set ratio while placing third with 1,607 career digs.
