CINCINNATI, Ohio ? The 2001 Conference USA champion Cincinnati volleyball team has been picked to finish second in 2002 by the league?s coaches.

Three-time All-C-USA honoree Bonita Wise was named to the six-player preseason all-league team.

The Bearcats went 23-8 in 2001, including a 14-2 mark in conference matches to claim their first outright title. UC reached the NCAA Tournament for the third-straight year, defeating Xavier in the first round for its first tourney win.

In the preseason AVCA/USA Today Coaches? Poll released on Aug. 13, the Bearcats received the 39th most points, one of three C-USA schools to receive votes. 2002 opponents Colorado State and Notre Dame were ranked No. 18 and No. 25, respectively, and Cal Poly-SLO, Louisville and South Florida each received votes.

Four starters return from last year?s Bearcat squad, including middle blocker Wise, who ranked among the league leaders in blocks and hitting percentage. Also back is two-time C-USA Defensive Player of the Year Trish Ladusaw, owner of every UC dig record and fourth on C-USA?s career digs list.

UC opens its regular season on Aug. 30 at the Shamrock Invitational hosted by Notre Dame. The home debut of the Bearcats will be on Sept. 3 when they host Miami (O.) at 7 p.m. in the Shoemaker Center.
