The Cincinnati Bearcat volleyball team will take on cross-town rival Xavier University Tuesday, October 25 at 7:30 p.m. in Fifth Third Arena. The match will serve as the team's Dig for a Cure game, raising money and awareness for breast cancer.
The Bearcats are led on the season by senior Missy Harpenau and junior Jordanne Scott. Harpenau averages 3.44 kills per set and 0.31 aces per set, both numbers leading the team. Scott, who was just named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll this week, posts a team-high .277 hitting percentage.
Freshman setter Caylin Mahoney has taken to her starting role well. She was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week this week for the second time in her career after her performance against Western Kentucky, Pittburgh and West Virginia. She boasts a team-high 10.68 assists per set. This average puts her second in the conference and 50th in the nation.
Sophomore libero Emily Macintyre continues to lead the defensive effort with 3.92 digs per set. At the net, junior Becca Refenes leads the team with 1.10 blocks per set.
Xavier is led by Sarah Brown, who averages 3.18 kills per set. The match will serve as a freshman setter showdown, as Xavier is led in assists per set by freshman Aubree Smith who has 10.04 per set. She, like Mahoney, has been named conference Rookie of the Week in the A-10 multiple times (4). Cincinnati native Stephanie Vorherr leads the team with 4.28 digs per set. Vorherr played on the same high school team as Harpenau for three years.
The first 75 fans in the door Tuesday will receive a pink Adidas bag and will be encouraged to make donations for breast cancer research. Fans who can't make it to Fifth Third Arena can follow the match on Gametracker, twitter: @cincinnativball or live video on gobearcats.com.
