CINCINNATI, Ohio — The University of Cincinnati volleyball team rallied from deficits in each of the last two games to take a three-game decision over the visiting Saint Louis Billikens on Saturday night in the Shoemaker Center, by scores of 30-16, 30-26 and 30-24. Julie DuPont paced Cincinnati with 20 kills and eight digs, helping the Bearcats to their 10th straight win and 15th in the last 16 matches. The Bearcats improve to 17-6 overall, with an 8-1 C-USA slate, while Saint Louis falls to 17-9, 7-3 C-USA.

Trish Ladusaw posted her second double-double of the weekend with 15 kills and 14 digs and Bonita Wise added 11 kills, seven digs and seven blocks for the Bearcats. The Billikens’ Colleen Hunter, one of C-USA’s premier players was held to just nine kills on .033 hitting and eight digs. Ashley Hunter also had nine kills for Saint Louis.

The Bearcats came out of the gates strong, with three DuPont kills and a kill and a block by Rachel Torblaa giving Cincinnati a 5-1 lead. But Saint Louis came roaring back with seven of the next eight points to take a two-point lead. The Billikens did most of their damage at the net, recording five blocks during the span, including three straight by the combination of Ember Knobeloch and Beth Middendorf.

Cincinnati responded with a 7-0 run that gave them a lead they would not relinquish for the duration of game one. As Saint Louis had just done previously, the Bearcats did their damage at the net scoring five of their next eight points on blocks. Wise was at the center of most of the blocking, having a hand in four of the five.

The Bearcats continued their assault on the blocks for the remainder of the first stanza, finishing game one with nine blocks, while holding the Billikens to an unbelievable -.300 hitting during the stanza. DuPont and Wise each carded four kills offensively during game one.

Saint Louis started strong in game two, battling the Bearcats to five ties in the first 10 points of the match. The visitors drew out to a five-point lead on two occasions at 14-9 and 19-14 on kills by Ashley Hunter. Cincinnati battled to within one three different times, before a Wise kill knotted the score at 25. The score was tied again at 26, but DuPont registered three kills in the last four points to send UC into the break with a two game lead. DuPont was redhot during the stanza, notching eight kills against just two errors in 19 swings during game two.

Game three was as much of a battle as game two, with the score tied 14 times. Cincinnati actually trailed for much of the game, but never by more than two points as the two teams battled. A Torblaa kill gave the Bearcats the lead at 21-20 and they never looked back, scoring nine of the last 13 points to seal the win. Following a DuPont kill that made it 24-21, freshman Maddie Barron helped ice the match with back-to-back service aces that built a five-point cushion. Ladusaw carded kills on three of the next four points and following a Cincinnati error, DuPont ended the contest with a kill.

DuPont again led the way in the final game, scoring eight kills with only two errors in 14 attempts. Ladusaw added six of her 15 kills in the final game as well.

“This is the start for us on the road to the (C-USA) championship,” said Bearcat head coach Reed Sunahara. “I thought the key was we stopped Colleen Hunter and contained everyone else. This was a good, collective win for us. It wasn’t one person, it was everyone.”

The Bearcats are back on the road next weekend for C-USA tilts at TCU (Nov. 7) and Houston (Nov. 9). Cincinnati wraps up the C-USA slate at home against South Florida on Nov. 15 and UAB on Nov. 17.
