Bearcats Sweep Weekly BIG EAST Honors|
Nov. 7, 2011
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Senior Missy Harpenau (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mother of Mercy) and freshman Caylin Mahoney (Fort Worth, Texas/Keller Central) have both received BIG EAST honors this week, the conference announced Monday, after a 2-0 record over the weekend.
The two starters performed well over the Bearcats' undefeated weekend. Saturday, the team defeated Marquette. This snapped the Golden Eagles 10-0 conference record. Cincinnati also defeated Syracuse in dominating fashion, three sets to none. The last time two Cincinnati players have received the BIG EAST's major weekly awards in the same week was in 2009 when Stephanie Niemer and Megan Turner were honored.
Harpenau earns her first Player of the Week honor of the season and the second of her career. The lone senior hit a .444 percentage with only three total errors, averaging 4.71 kills per set. She also led the team in both matches in digs, totaling 27 over the weekend (3.85 per set). Both performances over the weekend were double-doubles. Harpenau recorded 5 serving aces and 6 blocks over the weekend, including a career-high 3 solo blocks in the match against Marquette. Earlier this season, Harpenau became the sixth member of the 1,000 Kill-1,000 Dig Club in Cincinnati volleyball history.
Mahoney garners her third Freshman of the Week award of her young career. The setter averaged 12.57 assists per set, recording 88 total over the course of the two matches. She was the quarterback of a Bearcat attack, which hit .362 total in the weekend. She also was a factor in other aspects of the game with 3 aces, 14 digs and 3 blocks total. Her three Freshman of the Week awards so far tie the second-most in a season in Bearcat history with Harpenau also earning three her freshman year in 2008. The record is five honors in one season, set by Jessie Nevitt in 2005.
The two wins keep the longest home winning streak in the nation alive with 48 consecutive wins at Fifth Third Arena. This weekend was also vital to the Bearcats' future in the BIG EAST Tournament next week, as they automatically earn a spot. The team moved from third to second in the standings, moving Louisville to first and Marquette to third.
The Bearcats will be on the road this weekend as they travel to Georgetown and Villanova to wrap up their regular season BIG EAST run. Game times are Friday at 12:30 p.m. (Georgetown) and Sunday at 2:00 p.m. (Villanova). Fans can follow along on gobearcats.com and on twitter @cincinnativball.
