Espelage joined UC as an athletic academic advisor for student-athletes in July 2008. He is the academic advisor for freshman football, women's basketball and women's track and field. Additionally, he assists in recruiting prospective student-athletes during on-campus visits. Under his guidance in 2009, the football team ranked atop the Bowl Championship Series Top 10 in academic rankings, according to the graduation success rates.
While working towards his masters in sports administration at Xavier, he served as an intern academic advisor for men's and women's basketball and women's volleyball. His duties included monitoring academic progress, providing tutorial and registration assistance and assisting student-athletes in evaluating their academic problems.
Espelage earned his bachelors degree in public relations from Northern Kentucky in 2005 before going on to pursue his masters from Xavier in 2008. He has been a member of the National Associate of Academic Advisors since 2008.
