OXFORD, Ohio - The University of Cincinnati swimming and diving team wrapped up action on the opening day of the Miami University Invitational Thursday evening at Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center.
Day 1 of the Miami Invitational began with the 1-meter and 3-meter diving competitions before four swimming events - the women's 800-yard freestyle relay, the men's and women's 1,650-yard freestyle and the men's 800 free.
In the first swimming event of the night, the UC women's 800 free relay team of sophomore Weronika Wasiakowska (Przykop, Poland/School of Sports Championship), junior Bailey Laban (Lima, Ohio/Shawnee), sophomore Kirsten Rissover (Cincinnati, Ohio/Walnut Hills) and senior Anna Bersani (Kings Mills, Ohio/Kings) placed fourth out of four teams with a recorded time of 7 minutes, 41.5 seconds. Miami won the event with a time of 7:22.96.
After no Bearcat competed in the men's 1,650 free, sophomore Katie Nemann (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) led the UC charge in the women's division of the race with a mark of 17:25.39. Nemann was followed by sophomore Amanda Hardewig (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin), who placed 13th after finishing in 17:44.96, and junior Ashley Yanzsa (Ft. Belvior, Va./Lakota East/Wisconsin-Milwaukee), who placed 21st with a mark of 18:21.16. Miami's Courtney Collett won the event after recording a time of 16:50.09.
In the final swimming event of the day, the UC men placed fourth in the 800 free relay when junior Roberto Nevarez (Chihuahua, Mexico/ITESM Chihuahua), senior Haywood Miller (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase/Maryland), junior Chris Hale (Hillsborough, N.C./Durham School of the Arts/Maryland) and junior Griffin Davis (Lexington, Ky./Dunbar/DePauw) produced a time of 6:54.34. Denison won the event with a time of 6:39.94.
Friday and Saturday's competitions will be broken up into prelims at 9 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m. each day. Live results from the Miami Invite can be viewed here.
