CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati baseball team overcame a one hour and 58 minute rain delay to defeat crosstown rival Xavier 10-2 on Wednesday night at Marge Schott Stadium. Freshman Forrest Perron (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) hit his first-career homerun and added a career-high four hits and four RBI in the game.
The Bearcats improved to 20-29 on the season after sweeping the Musketeers (24-23) in two games this week.
With the game tied 2-2 in the bottom of the second inning, the Bearcats scored two runs to take the lead for good. Perron came to the plate with runners on first and second and reached on an error to bring the winning run across. One batter later, junior Justin Glass (Fort Wayne, Ind./Carroll) hit a sacrifice fly to score freshman Colin Hawk (Beech Grove, Ind./Roncalli) from first.
The Bearcats took a 4-2 lead into the rain delay that lasted one hour and 58 minutes. The game took a total of four hours and 24 minutes to complete.
Senior southpaw Thomas Gentile (4-1) entered after the delay to strike out a season-high eight batters and pick up the win. XU’s Zach Johnson (0-1) took the loss.
Cincinnati added insurance runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Hawk led off the home half of the sixth inning with a single before Perron jacked his homerun just inside the right field foul pole to bring the lead to 7-2.
The Bearcats got three runs in the seventh, led by Perron’s career-high fourth hit of the game. His single up the middle scored freshman Devin Wenzel (Blandon, Pa./Fleetwood Area) and junior Ryan Quinn (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) to increase the lead to 9-2. One batter later, redshirt sophomore Ethan McAlpine (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller) singled to score Hawk and give the Bearcats the final 10-2 advantage.
The win marked the third over Xavier this season for the Bearcats. UC topped XU 7-6 at Marge Schott Stadium on April 9 as part of the Joe Nuxhall Classic. The Bearcats also picked up a 5-3 win at Xavier’s Hayden Field on May 7.
Xavier opened the game with three straight singles to load the bases with only one out. A fielding error plated a run for the Musketeers, but starting pitcher Christian McElroy (Middletown, Ohio/Sinclair CC) responded with a strikeout and a groundout to end the inning.
Cincinnati took a lead in the bottom of the first inning following a couple hits of its own. Perron led off with a single, advanced to second on a fielding error and stole third. The freshman scored on a fielder’s choice by Ian Happ (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Labanon) to tie the game at 1-1. Junior Matt Williams (Mason, Ohio/Cincinnati Hills Christian) followed with an RBI single that scored Happ and gave UC its first lead of the game.
The Muskies pulled even in the second when Stephen Schoettmer sent the second pitch of the inning over the center field fence to tie the game at 2-2.
The Bearcats will be back in action on Fri., May 10 when they begin a three-game series against Santa Clara of the West Coast Conference. The game will be played at 6:30 p.m. at Marge Schott Stadium.
