CINCINNATI -- University of Cincinnati baseball head coach Brian Cleary announced Thursday the addition of 17 student-athletes to the 2012-13 roster.

"The arrival of this class on campus is the culmination of much work by our staff in identifying a large number of players who will be central in re-establishing our program and moving UC Baseball to the top of the BIG EAST," said Cleary. "J.D. Heilmann and Greg Mamula both did a fantastic job of identifying and attracting players of high character who bring both strong academic credentials and excellent baseball backgrounds to our program. We are eager to welcome this group - which is both very talented and larger than normal - to campus and to get them on the field with our returners so that we can begin preparing for the 2013 season."

The incoming recruiting class - which features 16 freshmen and one junior college transfer - is comprised of six infielders, six pitchers, three catchers and two outfielders.

"We are very excited about our incoming class," said Heilmann, UC baseball's recruiting coordinator and pitching coach. "I think we have identified and filled our needs for this upcoming season. This group will make an immediate impact and help us achieve our goal of a BIG EAST Championship."

Nine members of the class are from Ohio, three are natives of Pennsylvania, two will arrive at UC from both Kentucky and Indiana, while one comes from Missouri.

Four of the prospects are from the Greater Cincinnati Tri-State region: Left-handed pitcher Mike Conrad from Lakota East, the 2011 Cincinnati Enquirer Player of the Year; catcher Anthony Hunt of Amelia; southpaw Mark Downs from Ryle High School in Northern Kentucky; and infielder Joe Schaffer from Ross, High School the younger brother of former Bearcats linebacker J.K. Schaffer.

Ten of the 16 freshmen received All-America honorable mentions from the baseball recruiting website Perfect Game.

Mitch Patishall, a right-handed pitcher from Pendleton Heights, Ind., was drafted in June by the Chicago White Sox in the 36th round of the 2012 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, but has elected to enroll at UC.

The Bearcats will report to campus Aug. 22 and will hold their first workout of the fall semester on Aug. 27, the first day of fall classes.
