CINCINNATI – A first-place finish at the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship by Emerson Newsome has earned him BIG EAST Men’s Golf Athlete of the Week honors as announced by the conference office Thursday afternoon.
The freshman picked up medalist honors at the tournament in just his ninth collegiate event. He shot a 210 (67-71-72) on the par-72 course, narrowly defeating Jonathan Grey (69-74-68=211) and the UAB duo of Wilson McDonald (70-70-71=211) and Thomas Sutton (72-68-71=211). The individual tournament victory is the first for the Bearcats since Joe Young won the 2007 LaRosa’s Collegiate Cup.
“I am very proud of Emerson and happy for our program,” said head coach Doug Martin. “Emerson has worked very hard and is well deserving of this honor.”
Newsome started the tournament strong with a career-best 5-under 67 in the opening round Monday morning, recording five birdies and no bogeys. He followed in the afternoon with a second-round 1-under 71, making par on 17 of the 18 holes with only one bogey.
Newsome overcame bogeys on two of his first four holes on Tuesday thanks to a 1-under 35 on the back nine holes to card an even par 72 during the final round.
The freshman’s effort also led the Bearcats to their best team finish of the season, taking fifth place in the 14-team field with an 8-over 284-308-296=888.
The men’s golf team next competes at the BIG EAST Championship which runs April 28-30 in Orlando, Fla.
