Numerous University of Cincinnati student-athletes devoted time on Jan. 15 and 16, 2014 to participate in the Second Annual Thank-a-Thon by using phones in the ticket and UCATS offices located in the Lindner Center to express their gratitude to more than 3,000 athletics donors. Nearly 100 letters were also sent to donors in the George Smith Society.
“It means a lot to me because a lot of people on my team don’t have athletic scholarships,” said Michael Nwankwo, who is a sophomore on the men’s track & field team. “With having a partial scholarship, it helps me focus not only on the track but also in the classroom. It takes a big burden off my shoulders.”
This year, UCATS raised over $4 million in donations from generous Cincinnati Athletics supporters. Each gift to UCATS, not matter the size, directly improves the lives of every UC student-athlete.
“The funding I receive helps me pursue my dream,” said Cincinnati women’s soccer goalkeeper Natalie Smith. “It definitely helps not having to worry about the financial aspect of college, which many students do. Without having that stress, I can put all my attention into excelling in the classroom and on the field.”
In the following weeks, UC student-athletes will continue to reach out to Bearcats supporters. By the end of the Thank-a-Thon, the total number of donors reached will be over 4,500.
UCATS is committed to raising significant funds to offset the cost of ever-increasing athletic scholarships for the Bearcats student-athletes who are fulfilling their dreams. For that same reason, UC student-athletes cannot say thank you enough. Donations and support are what keeps Cincinnati Athletics consistently thriving and continuing in excellence.
Baseball and women’s soccer were the most represented teams out of UC’s 19 Division I programs.
