CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati women’s golf team traveled to Orlando, Fla., for the BIG EAST Championship set to run from Sun., April 21 through Tues., April 23 at the Reunion Resort. The Bearcats head into the tournament ranked third in the league, according to GolfStat.com.
“I think this is an open year in the BIG EAST” said head coach Janet Carl. “There is real potential for several teams to come out with the win. The BIG EAST Championship puts all teams on a level playing field, given the fact that we will play three rounds. We are currently ranked third in the BIG EAST which is a very nice accomplishment for the team this year.”
Five players will compete for Cincinnati at the championship, including seniors Alex Carl (Hebron, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) and Maria Roos (Uppsala, Sweden/Mississippi State), junior Olivia Dose (Goteborg, Sweden/Goteborg Hogre Samskola), sophomore Mackenzie Moir (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart Academy) and freshman Stefanie Mitchell (Sarasota, Fla./Riverview).
The Bearcats are closing out a 2012-13 season where they averaged 305.6 strokes per round with a low round of 296 coming on Oct. 23 at the FIU Pat Bradley Invitational. On March 24, the team won its first tournament of the season, collecting first-place honors at the UC Spring Invitational in Crystal River, Fla.
The team will surely look to the experience and leadership of upperclassmen Carl, Roos and Dose. The three have occupied the top-three spots for Cincinnati in every tournament this spring and Dose has been the Bearcats’ top finisher in all four spring tournaments.
“There is a great opportunity for us to come out with a victory which is an awesome way for us to leave our legacy at UC” said Alex Carl
when lamenting on the upperclassmen’s role on the team. “We are able to help the other girls on the team continue to work hard and build for next year as well.”
Cincinnati finished the 2012 BIG EAST Championship in seventh place with a score of 315-327-320=962. Dose earned the team’s highest individual finish when she tied for 19th with a score of 238 (75-82-81).
The Bearcats will all tee off from hole No. 1 between 9:40 and 10:20 a.m., on Sunday.
