CINCINNATI – Head Coach Neil Stafford and the University of Cincinnati women’s soccer team have released their 2013 fall schedule. The Bearcats will face 10 top-100 RPI teams, including four NCAA tournament teams from a season ago.
“We are excited with the diversity of the schedule and look forward to competing with some fantastic programs” said Stafford. “Getting to play teams that compete year in and year out in the NCAA Tournament gives us a good measuring stick for where we need to be. Unfortunately we are on the road quite a bit, but I think that adversity makes for some great opportunities in regards to team chemistry.”
The 20-game schedule will feature six teams within the top 50 of the RPI rankings, including Miami (Fla.), Dayton, Long Beach State, Rutgers, Central Florida and Louisville. Additionally, four more teams (Memphis, SMU, USF and Connecticut) rank among the top 100. Miami, Long Beach, Rutgers and UCF were all 2012 NCAA tournament participants with the Scarlet Knights and the Knights advancing into the second round.
Overall, UC will host eight games, play 11 on the road and play one neutral site match. The Bearcats will host five American Athletic Conference games while playing on the road for four.
The schedule begins on Aug. 16 with an exhibition game against Marshall at 3 p.m. at Gettler Stadium.
UC will open the regular season with three consecutive road games against a pair of top-50 RPI teams. It will face Miami (Fla.) on Aug. 23 before traveling to Lincoln, Neb., to face the Nebraska Cornhuskers on Aug. 25. The Bearcats will finish the road swing on Aug. 30 with a game at Dayton at 7:30 p.m.
Gettler Stadium will hold its first regular season game of the season when Coach Stafford and the Bearcats return home to face the University of Massachusetts-Lowell at 1 p.m. on Sun. Sept. 1.
The team will then head west for two games on Sept. 6 and 8. UC will face Long Beach State and UC Santa Barbara, respectively, before coming back to Cincinnati for a game at crosstown rival Xavier at 7 p.m. on Sept. 13.
Sept. 15 will be the Bearcats’ third game at Gettler Stadium. They will welcome Kent State at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
An east coast swing will then see the Bearcats heading to play Cornell and Providence. They will face the Big Red of Cornell on Sept. 20 at a neutral site in Connecticut before traveling to Rhode Island to face old conference foes the Friars of Providence on Sept. 22.
The American play will open on Sept. 27 when Cincinnati plays Rutgers at Gettler Stadium at 7 p.m. It will also host Memphis at 1 p.m. on Sept. 29.
The team will make a Texas road trip to face Houston and SMU Oct. 3 and Oct. 6, respectively, before returning home for more conference matches. The Bearcats will play UCF at 4:30 on Oct. 11 and USF at 1 p.m. on Oct. 13.
The Bearcats will close out the road schedule with a Thursday/Sunday weekend at Connecticut and Temple on Oct. 17 and 20.
The last regular season game will be played at Gettler Stadium at 7 p.m. on Oct. 25 against longtime rival Louisville. The team’s seniors will be honored during the game.
The American Athletic Conference tournament will begin on Oct. 31 with a first round playoff. The quarterfinals will take place on Nov. 3, the semifinals on Nov. 8 and the championship game on Nov. 10. All games will be played on campus sites.
The 2013 Bearcats will be led by 2012 leading scorer sophomore Laura Rose (Cincinnati, Ohio/Walnut Hills), who paced the team with five goals and 11 points. They will also return junior Mackenzie Grause (Ft. Thomas, Ky./Highlands) who finished 2012 with three goals, and Junior goalkeeper Kristina Utley (Castro Valely, Calif./Castro Valley) who played every minute of last season between the pipes for UC.
