CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati women’s tennis team picked up a 6-1 victory over Florida Atlantic University on March 21 in Boca Raton, Fla. Five players earned singles victories in the match.
The Bearcats kicked off the match with two doubles victories to earn the doubles point and go ahead 1-0 in the match. The senior duo of Jasmine Lee (Canton, Ohio/Glen Oak) and Caitlin O’Gara (Springboro, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick) blanked Claire Andrews and Natasha Phillips 8-0 before juniors Sierra Sullivan (Austin, Texas/Khabele School) and Ashleigh Witte (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) topped Catalina Ene and Stephanie Cardullo 8-5 to give Cincinnati the point.
In singles action, Lee beat Ene 6-2, 6-1 at the top spot and Witte downed Natasha Basma 6-0, 6-4 on court No. 3. Freshman Kelly Poggensee-Wei (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake North) came from behind to beat Cardullo 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8) in the fourth spot while freshman Hannah Wille (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway Central) topped Taylor Briggs 6-2, 6-1 on court No. 5. Sophomore Kristina Georgieva rounded out the singles victories with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Phillips in the sixth position.
The Bearcats will be back in action on Tuesday, March 26 when they host Northern Kentucky at the Western Tennis and Fitness Center at 3 p.m.
