CINCINNATI –The University of Cincinnati women’s tennis team fell 4-3 to Marquette on Sunday at the Trabert-Talbert Tennis Center in a match that lasted four hours and 50 minutes. The team celebrated senior day and honored senior Jasmine Lee (Canton, Ohio/Glen Oak) in a prematch celebration.
With the score tied at 3-3 late in the match, all eyes turned to court No. 5 where freshman Hannah Wille (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway Central) was playing Marquette’s Ali Dawson. Wille won the first set, dropped the second and found herself down 4-1 in the third when she fought her way back, taking a 6-5 lead. Dawson won the next game to force a tiebreak, the second of the match for the duo. Wille eventually lost 7-2 in the tiebreak for a final score of 6-7 (4-7), 2-6, 7-6 (7-2).
The Bearcats showed a lot of fight during a hotly contested doubles contest that saw every team come from behind to grab a victory. Lee and senior Caitlin O’Gara (Springboro, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick) were down 4-3 to Dawson and Aina Hernandez Soler on court No. 1 before mounting a furious comeback to win five consecutive games and score an 8-4 victory. On court No. 3, freshman Kelly Poggensee-Wei (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake North) and sophomore Kristina Georgieva (Varna, Bulgaria/Varna Sports School) found themselves down 6-3 to Rocio Diaz and Aleeza Kanner before locking down and earning four straight wins to take a 7-6 lead. Marquette tied the score at 8-8 to force a tiebreak where Poggensee-Wei and Georgieva dominated to earn the 9-8 victory. The three doubles victories gave UC an early 1-0 match lead heading into singles action.
Witte kicked off singles play with an easy 6-0, 6-2 victory over Hernandez Soler in the third position. The win gave UC a 2-0 lead and set up a back-and-fourth affair between the two teams. After Witte’s win, Marquette tied the score with two singles wins of its own. Vanessa Foltinger beat UC’s Georgieva 6-2, 6-1 in the sixth position while Gebes topped O’Gara 6-4, 6-3 on court No. 2. With the score tied at 2-2, Lee pulled out a victory as the top seed, winning 6-4, 6-2 on her senior day to put Cincinnati ahead 3-2.
