CINCINNATI –The University of Cincinnati volleyball team finished its regular season BIG EAST play Sunday afternoon with a 3-2 win over Villanova (22-25, 25-14, 25-23, 24-26, 15-4).

The win puts the Bearcats (12-2) in second place in the BIG EAST, under regular season champion Louisville. The Bearcats were led by all positions on the court. Sophomore libero Emily MacIntyre (Muncie, Ind. /Yorktown) recorded 34 digs, a career-best. This number comes within 3 digs of the single-season match record for digs set by Jamie Frey in 2007.

Three players recorded double-digit kills in the win. Junior Jordanne Scott (Indianapolis, Ind. /Lawrence North) led all players with 24 kills and a .378 percentage. Senior Missy Harpenau (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mother of Mercy) followed with another double-double (17 kills, 15 digs). Junior Becca Refenes (Westland, Mich. /Lutheran Westland) recorded 10 kills and a .333 percentage.

Refenes also did well at the net. She put down 7 block assists and a solo block, accounting for 7.5 out of the team’s 11. Freshman Caylin Mahoney (Fort Worth, Texas/Keller Central) recorded a double-double with a match-high 49 assists and 13 digs.

The fifth and final set started with two Scott kills and a block from Hayden and Scott for a 4-2 Bearcat lead in the set to 15. Mahoney recorded two kills and junior Emily Hayden (Louisville, Ky. /Assumption) teamed up with Harpenau for a block to continue the lead 11-4. The match ended with an ace from MacIntyre and a fifth set win 15-4.

The fourth set started with a 5-0 Villanova run. Harpenau answered back with a 8-0 serving run thanks to kills from Scott and Refenes for a 8-5 Bearcat lead. Scott and Refenes teamed up for a block to keep the lead 17-13. Junior Megan Turner (Ontario, N.Y. /Wayne Central) added a well-placed ball in front of the attack line and Scott added a kill to continue the Bearcats’ run 20-17. The Wildcats fought back however at the end of the set to tie the match at two sets each 26-24.

The Bearcats started the third set with an 8-5 lead thanks to kills from Harpenau and Mahoney. The score remained close as the Wildcats began to record kills but the Bearcats remained in the lead 18-14. Bearcat hitting errors allowed the Wildcats to come within one points 24-23. The set ended with a Scott kill 25-23 in favor of Cincinnati.

Mahoney started the second set with a 6-0 serving run thanks to kills from Harpenau and Scott, digs from freshman Jamie Netisingha (Westmont, Ill. /Hinsdale Central) and MacIntyre and a solo block from Refenes. Turner and Hayden then added kills of their own to extend the lead 15-4. Harpenau added an ace toward the end of the set for a 24-13 lead. Scott ended the set with a kill 25-14.

Villanova started with a quick 9-5 lead in the first set, even with Bearcat points earned by kills from Harpenau, Scott, Turner and Hayden. Refenes then recorded two blocks with Harpenau and one with Mahoney to switch momentum for a 16-13 Bearcat lead. The Wildcats fought back to get ahead 22-21. A Wildcat kill secured the Villanova first set win 25-22. Statistically, the set was very even. The Wildcats hit .317, while the Bearcats recorded a .316 percentage. Villanova also barely out-dug Cincinnati 16-14.

The Bearcats will travel next week to Marquette for the BIG EAST Championship tournament. Cincinnati’s first match as the second seed will be against the No. 7 seed November 18 at 12:30 p.m. CT.
