JOHNSON CITY, Tenn.
– University of Cincinnati women's basketball was unable to recover from a 13-point second-half deficit Friday night, dropping an 87-77 decision to the ETSU Buccaneers inside Brooks Gym.

In the regular-season opener for both teams, the two squads traded 13-point advantages with UC (0-1) holding a sizeable lead early in the second quarter while ETSU (1-0) surged out of halftime with a large advantage late in the third. The Bearcats cut their deficit to just three points with 2:39 left in the game, but a 13-6 Buccaneer run over the duration of the contest put the Red & Black away, 87-77.

UC featured four double-figure scorers led by senior forward Shanice Johnson (Philadelphia, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara/Monroe CC) and freshman forward Iimar'I Thomas (Oakland, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep) each scoring 19 points, while senior guard Ana Owens (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) added 13 and junior guard Nikira Goings (Marietta, Ga./Osborne) tallied 11. Johnson and Thomas each also grabbed eight rebounds.

The Bearcats seemed to be in the driver's seat early in the second quarter, but, behind a raucous home crowd, the Buccaneers caught fire. ETSU cut its deficit to three with 3:27 to go before halftime and after a quick UC burst, ended the period with a 5-1 run to bring the score to 44-40, visitors, at the break. After the Bucs tied the game early in the third quarter, the Red & Black fell victim to an 18-5 ETSU run to fall behind by a game-high 13 points. The Bearcats fought back in the fourth, trimming its shortfall to just three points with minutes to play, but a late home team rally distanced the two teams at the final horn.

UC shot the ball well from the field at 51 percent for the game, but knocked down only four three pointers compared to 11 for ETSU. The Red & Black was also forced into 25 turnovers which the Bucs converted into 23 points. The Bearcats were dominant in the paint with 38 points, and got 29 points from its bench. UC dominated on the boards, 42-26, and turned 15 offensive rebounds into 17 second-chance points. The Red & Black also got 19 points off of 13 Bucs turnovers and scored 14 fast-break points.
